Controlling Erosion and Protecting the Coast in Anaheim

By: Kaspersen, Janice Comments

Many of you have already registered for StormCon, which starts next week in Anaheim, California. A highlight this year is a track specifically dealing with Erosion and Sediment Control, which features presentations by Jerald Fifield and Eileen Straughn, among many others. Other tracks include BMP Case Studies, Green Infrastructure (including presentations on low-impact development techniques), and Water-Quality Monitoring. Presentations in these and other tracks will take place Tuesday, August 23, through Thursday, August 25.

Co-located with the conference this year, and particularly relevant to all of us concerned with coastal erosion, is Preparing for the Rising Tide: Coastal Protection Symposium. This all-day event takes place on Wednesday, August 24.

A few other highlights that are open to all attendees:

Panel Discussion
At the Opening General Session on Tuesday morning, August 23, five panelists will discuss “Changing the Rules: How Will New Stormwater Regulations Affect Municipal Programs?”

The panel includes
• Paul Crabtree, P.E., president of Crabtree Group Inc.
• Michael Harding, CPESC, of GeoSyntec Consultants
• Anna Lantin, P.E., CPESC, CPSWQ, vice president with RBF Consulting
• Roger C. Sutherland, P.E., of AMEC Earth & Environmental
• Glenn R. Rink, president and CEO of AbTech Industries, who will moderate the panel discussion

EPA Q&A
The popular EPA session is back—a chance to hear the latest news from the Environmental Protection Agency straight from the source and to ask questions. This year, Jeremy Bauer, an environmental scientist with USEPA’s Office of Wastewater Management, Water Permits Division, will give a talk titled “Overview of EPA Stormwater Rulemaking Proposal,” followed by questions from the audience. This session will take place on Wednesday, August 24, at 2:00.

Exhibit Hall
As always, StormCon’s exhibit hall will include a large selection of stormwater and erosion and sediment control technologies in a single venue—more than 170 exhibitors. The exhibit hall will be open beginning on Monday afternoon through Wednesday evening.
