While we’ve talked about the drought affecting Texas and Mexico, many other parts of the world are experiencing similar conditions—some that we in the US tend to overlook.
England is in the midst of a serious drought, with London—known for its rain and fog—and other regions in the southeastern part of the country facing newly implemented water restrictions. Water companies last week began limiting the amount of water people can use for residential irrigation and are urging customers to limit showers to four minutes. Violating the outdoor water use restriction, known as the “hosepipe ban,” could bring a fine of up to $1,500.
Conditions in parts of the country are drier than at any time since 1884. A desalination plant recently opened near London, but it will provide limited—and expensive—water. Officials are considering implementing a “drought order”—more severe than the hosepipe ban—if rainfall doesn’t increase.
