By Lori Lovely The waste industry is generally considered to operate in one of the harshest working environments, which takes its toll on operators and equipment alike. Machinery must live up to heavy-duty standards in order to endure in this rugged industry. That, however, may be changing ever so slightly. “The waste industry changed 20 years ago,” states Aaron Murphy, vice president of corporate affairs and marketing for CMA, a subsidiary of Double Coin Tires in Monrovia, CA. Most waste trucks no long...... continue reading

Written by Carol Brzozowski Manufacturers of vehicles and fuel systems agree, and many are putting more effort into this growing market segment. “The solid waste market, with regard to CNG or natural gas in general as a fuel, is one of the fastest-moving segments in the market we’ve seen today,” says William Zobel, vice president of business development for Trillium CNG. “Approximately 50% of all of the new refuse trucks purchased today are natural gas,” he adds. Written by Peter Hildebrandt As time goes by, the impetus and synergy for the development of viable natural-gas and hybrid collection vehicles—and even electric transport equipment—has come into its own. Whether fuel prices (gasoline or diesel) are up or down at the moment is irrelevant. In the long term, as municipalities look for investments that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, hybrid systems and natural-gas-powered vehicles (NGVs) clearly are a move in the right direction. ...... continue reading

Written by Neal Bolton According to the USDOT Federal Highway Administration, the average driver—age 35-55—drives over 15,000 miles per year, forward…and less than 1 mile in reverse. But 1 out of 4 accidents occurs when backing. Do the math: Mile for mile, backing poses 5,000 times more risk of an accident. Commercial Driving Garbage truck drivers log even more miles per year—an estimated 25,000—although there is wide variability due to route layout and distance to landfill or transfer station, et...... continue reading

It’s not quite the Mr. Fusion from Back to the Future II , but Rumpke of Ohio’s newest fleet of garbage trucks does indeed run on garbage. The Cincinnati-based landfill operation invested $2.3 million along with an $800,000 grant from Clean Fuels Ohio in order to put 10 new compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks on the street last August. The grant was part of the original, national stimulus package. The project includes the CNG-powered refuse collection trucks and the construction of a natural-gas fueling...... continue reading

It’s important to consider more than just weight capacity and length requirements when selecting a collection truck. Although there is no single specification that will work for every truck across the country, the factors to contemplate are similar and include operating environment, road conditions, average speed, body type, weather, driver training and skill level, maintenance capabilities, and expected life cycle of the vehicle. Charles Cook, Peterbilt segment manager, adds a few more to the list. “Te...... continue reading
